A military commander or civic magistrate, used of temple captains and city officials
Denotes a person holding a position of military or civic authority. In Luke's writings it appears in two distinct institutional contexts: the captain of the temple guard, who commanded the Levitical police force responsible for order in the temple precincts (Luke 22:4, 52; Acts 4:1; 5:24, 26), and the Roman colonial magistrates of Philippi who ordered Paul and Silas beaten and imprisoned (Acts 16:20, 22, 35, 36, 38). The term thus bridges Jewish religious authority and Greco-Roman civic governance. Spanish 'capitán/magistrado' and French 'magistrat/capitaine' reflect this dual application.
