Adj-GFS  |  3× in 1 sense
narrow, confined, restricted; lacking breadth or width, opposite of wide or spacious
An adjective meaning narrow, tight, constricted—the opposite of broad or wide. Jesus uses it in His teaching about the two ways: the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life (Matt 7:13-14, Luke 13:24). The narrow gate requires effort to enter; it doesn't accommodate crowds or baggage. Classical Greek uses it for narrow mountain passes, tight straits between seas, or cramped spaces—places where movement is restricted and only a few can pass. In Jesus' metaphor, the narrow way demands surrender, discipline, and singular devotion.

Senses
1. sense 1 All languages agree: English 'narrow', Spanish 'estrecha', French 'étroit', German transliterations (στενὴ, στενῆς). The three uses in Matthew 7:13-14 and Luke 13:24 establish a consistent image: the gate and way to life are narrow, not spacious. This narrowness isn't arbitrary restriction but the reality that the way of discipleship is focused, demanding, and traversed by few, contrasting with the broad way many choose.
