stumbling block, snare — anything that causes spiritual downfall, offense, or entrapment
Skandalon originally referred to the trigger-stick of a trap — the bait mechanism that snapped the snare shut. By New Testament times the word had been thoroughly metaphorized to denote anything causing someone to stumble into sin or moral ruin. Jesus warns that skandala must come but pronounces woe on those through whom they arrive (Matt 18:7). He even calls Peter a skandalon when the disciple resists the cross (Matt 16:23). Spanish 'escandalo,' French 'scandale,' and German 'Argernis' all derive from or mirror this Greek root.
Senses
1. stumbling block, cause of offense — A trap-stick, snare, or obstacle causing someone to fall into sin or spiritual ruin. The NT deploys it exclusively in metaphorical senses: causes of sin gathered at judgment (Matt 13:41), Peter as stumbling block to Jesus' mission (Matt 16:23), and the triple warning of Matt 18:7. Spanish 'escandalo' and French 'scandale' descend directly from this word. 15×
