Sarx spans a remarkable semantic arc in the New Testament: from the literal tissue of the body ('the two shall become one flesh,' Matt 19:5) to the whole sphere of creaturely weakness and moral vulnerability ('the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak,' Matt 26:41). Paul sharpens this further, using sarx for the unredeemed human condition opposed to the Spirit (Rom 8:4-9; Gal 5:16-17). Yet the word never becomes purely negative — the incarnation itself is stated in terms of flesh (John 1:14; 1 Tim 3:16).
