σάρκ-ῐνος G4560
Made of flesh, fleshly; pertaining to human nature in its weakness or physicality.
An adjective built on 'sarx' (flesh) with the suffix '-inos' indicating material composition--literally 'made of flesh.' Paul uses it to describe human nature in its mortal, limited condition: sold under sin (Rom 7:14), spiritually immature (1 Cor 3:1), and yet also the living medium on which God writes his new covenant--'tablets of flesh' rather than stone (2 Cor 3:3). Hebrews contrasts a 'fleshly commandment' with the power of an indestructible life (Heb 7:16). The Spanish distinction between 'carnal' and 'de carne' and the French 'de chair' highlight the material-composition sense that distinguishes this word from the more ethically loaded 'sarkikos.'
Senses
1. sense 1 — Consisting of or characterized by flesh; pertaining to the physical, mortal dimension of human existence. Unlike the closely related 'sarkikos' (which often carries a negative moral connotation of being 'governed by the flesh'), 'sarkinos' emphasizes material composition--being made of flesh. Paul calls the Roman believer 'fleshly, sold under sin' (Rom 7:14) to stress human frailty, and labels the Corinthians 'fleshly' in the sense of spiritual infancy (1 Cor 3:1). The most striking use is 2 Cor 3:3, where 'tablets of fleshly hearts' contrasts living, responsive human hearts with the cold stone of Sinai. In Heb 7:16, the 'fleshly commandment' refers to the Levitical priesthood's dependence on physical descent. French 'de chair' and Spanish 'de carne' preserve the compositional nuance. 4×
