1. throw, cast, hurl To throw or cast forcefully, whether of objects or persons; encompasses throwing down, throwing away, and throwing overboard. In Mt 27:5 Judas 'having thrown' (rhipsas) the silver pieces into the temple; in Lk 4:35 the demon 'having thrown' (rhipsan) the man down; in Acts 27:29 sailors 'having thrown' (rhipsantes) anchors; in Acts 27:19 they 'threw overboard' (erripsan) the ship's gear; in Mt 9:36 the crowds were 'cast down' (errimmenoi), i.e. prostrate and helpless like sheep without a shepherd; in Mt 15:30 the lame were 'thrown' (erripsan) at Jesus' feet; in Lk 17:2 it would be better to 'have been thrown' (erriptai) into the sea. All multilingual glosses converge: Arabic 'alqa/rama/taraha' (throw/cast), Hebrew 'hishlich' (hurl), Korean 'deonjida' (throw), Spanish 'arrojar/echar' (throw/cast). The different English renderings reflect contextual application of a single core action of forceful propulsion.
