V-IIM/P-3S  |  1× in 1 sense
to distract, drag away; to be overburdened with tasks
This verb means to drag away, distract, or be pulled in different directions. Luke uses it to describe Martha, who 'was distracted' (περιεσπᾶτο) by much serving while Mary sat at Jesus' feet (Luke 10:40). The term conveys being pulled away from what matters by excessive busyness. It captures the tension between activity and attention, between doing and being, in spiritual life.

Senses
1. sense 1 To be distracted or pulled away by many tasks. Luke's account of Martha's complaint reveals how service can become distraction when it diverts attention from Jesus himself. The multilingual glosses ('was-distracted,' 'estaba-distraída,' 'être-distrait') consistently emphasize being pulled in multiple directions, highlighting Jesus' gentle correction that one thing—attentive presence—is needed above frantic activity.
