V-PPA-NMP  |  42× in 1 sense
To suffer, endure pain or hardship — used of Christ's redemptive passion and believers' trials
A verb meaning 'to have something done to one,' hence 'to suffer, undergo, experience adversity.' In classical Greek it could denote any experience, good or bad, but NT usage concentrates on suffering. Its most theologically weighty occurrences are the passion predictions — 'the Son of Man must suffer many things' (Matt 16:21; Mark 8:31; Luke 9:22) — where it becomes virtually a technical term for Christ's redemptive death. Beyond Christological usage, it describes believers sharing in suffering (Phil 1:29; 1 Pet 2:20-21) and even ordinary hardship (Matt 17:15; 1 Cor 12:26).

Senses
1. suffer, endure pain To suffer, undergo pain, or endure hardship. In the passion predictions (Matt 16:21; Mark 8:31; Luke 9:22), pascho becomes virtually a technical term for Christ's appointed suffering — reflected in Spanish 'padecer,' French 'souffrir,' and German 'leiden.' It extends to believers sharing Christ's sufferings (Phil 1:29; 1 Pet 4:1) and to ordinary affliction like the tormented boy of Matt 17:15. 42×
