παρατήρ-ησις G3907
observation, close watching, careful scrutiny
Denoting careful observation, surveillance, or watchfulness—either for scientific inquiry or for suspicious monitoring. Classical authors used it for empirical observation in medicine and astronomy, but also for watching to detect faults. Luke 17:20 uses it in Jesus' saying that God's kingdom doesn't come 'with observation'—not arriving as an observable spectacle that investigators can track and calculate. The term suggests close watching for visible signs.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Luke 17:20 states God's kingdom doesn't come 'with observation' (παρατηρήσεως)—not as a visible phenomenon Pharisees can watch for and measure. The translations (English 'observation', Spanish 'observación', French 'observation') preserve the watching theme. Jesus rejects the idea that the kingdom arrives as an empirically observable event with clear markers. It comes differently—among and within, not susceptible to the kind of surveillance the Pharisees expected. 1×
