παραπορεύομαι G3899
V-PPM/P-NMP  |  5× in 1 sense
To pass by, go alongside, travel past; to walk along beside a place or through a region.
A compound verb (παρα- + πορεύομαι) meaning to go alongside or pass by a place. In the NT it appears exclusively in the Synoptic Gospels, most often in Mark. Two of its uses describe hostile passersby mocking Jesus on the cross (Matt 27:39; Mark 15:29), while Mark 2:23 describes the disciples walking alongside grain fields on the Sabbath. Mark 9:30 uses it for Jesus and his disciples passing through Galilee secretly, and Mark 11:20 for passing by the withered fig tree the next morning. The Spanish 'pasando/pasar' and French 'passer-à-côté' both preserve the alongside-motion sense inherent in the παρα- prefix.

Senses
1. sense 1 To pass by or walk alongside — to go past a place or travel through an area without stopping as the primary purpose. The παρα- prefix gives it a 'beside' nuance: one moves along a road that runs past something. The two crucifixion scenes (Matt 27:39; Mark 15:29) depict people 'passing by' who pause to hurl insults, capturing the cruel casualness of passersby mocking the crucified. Mark 2:23 portrays the disciples passing alongside grain fields, plucking heads of grain — a Sabbath controversy scene. Mark 9:30 describes secretive travel through Galilee, and Mark 11:20 uses it for the discovery of the withered fig tree as they passed by in the morning. The Spanish 'pasaban' (they were passing) and German 'vorbeigehen' (to go by in front) both convey this sense of movement past a fixed point.
