Paralytic, paralyzed person — one afflicted with paralysis, unable to move; a substantivized adjective in healing narratives
The adjective paralytikos (παραλυτικός), used substantively, designates a person suffering from paralysis. All ten NT occurrences belong to Synoptic healing narratives. Matthew lists paralytics among those brought to Jesus in Galilee (4:24) and narrates the healing of the centurion's paralytic servant (8:6). The most vivid scene is the paralytic lowered through the roof at Capernaum (Matt 9:2,6; Mark 2:3-10), where Jesus first forgives sins and then commands, 'Rise, take up your bed and walk.' The term is purely medical-descriptive, with no metaphorical extension in the NT. Translations uniformly employ a clinical or descriptive term: Spanish 'paralitico,' Hindi 'lakva rogi,' Arabic 'mafluj,' Korean 'jungpung byeongja,' Swahili 'aliyepooza.'

Senses
1. paralytic, paralyzed person A person afflicted with paralysis, unable to move one or more limbs; used as a substantivized adjective in the Synoptic healing accounts. Appears in the Capernaum roof-lowering miracle (Matt 9:2,6; Mark 2:3-5,9-10), the Galilean summary of those brought to Jesus (Matt 4:24), and the centurion's servant (Matt 8:6). The singular and plural forms represent number inflection of one lexical meaning — a person paralyzed and presented for healing. Spanish 'paralitico,' Arabic 'mafluj,' Hindi 'lakva rogi,' Korean 'jungpung byeongja,' and Swahili 'aliyepooza' all denote the same medical condition. 10×
