παρα-κύπτω G3879
To stoop down and look, peer in, bend over to examine closely; to gaze intently into something.
A verb meaning to stoop down in order to look closely — to bend over and peer into something with careful attention. It appears most memorably in the resurrection narratives: Peter stoops to look into the empty tomb (Luke 24:12), the beloved disciple bends to peer in and sees the linen cloths (John 20:5), and Mary stoops into the tomb weeping (John 20:11). James 1:25 extends the image metaphorically: one who 'looks intently' into the perfect law of liberty and perseveres will be blessed. First Peter 1:12 uses it strikingly of angels who 'long to look into' the mysteries of salvation. The Spanish 'inclinarse' (to lean) and German 'hinabblicken' (to look downward) both capture the physical posture of stooping to see.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To stoop down and look intently, to bend over and peer into something with focused attention. The verb combines a physical posture (bending, leaning) with purposeful looking. In the tomb narratives, Peter (Luke 24:12), the beloved disciple (John 20:5), and Mary Magdalene (John 20:11) each παρακύπτω into the empty tomb, the physical bending mirroring their searching hearts. James 1:25 transposes this vivid image into the spiritual realm: the person who 'stoops to gaze into' the perfect law of freedom — not merely glancing but examining closely — that person acts and is blessed. Most strikingly, 1 Pet 1:12 says even angels desire to 'stoop and peer into' the gospel realities. The Spanish 'asomándose' (peering) and French 'se-pencher' (to lean over) nicely preserve the dual physicality of bending and looking. 5×
