The Greek verb paraginomai combines para ('alongside') with ginomai ('to come into being, to arrive'), producing a word whose primary force is reaching a destination. In 31 of its 37 NT occurrences, it narrates simple arrival -- the Magi coming to Jerusalem (Matt 2:1), elders arriving at Jesus' side (Luke 7:4), relatives coming to find him (Luke 8:19). But paraginomai also carries dramatic staging power: John the Baptist 'appears' preaching in the wilderness (Matt 3:1), and Christ 'appears' as the great high priest (Heb 9:11).
