Adv  |  9× in 2 senses
Certainly, by all means, altogether; with negation: not at all, by no means.
An emphatic adverb that intensifies whatever it modifies. When affirming, it means 'certainly,' 'surely,' or 'by all means'—as when the crowd at Lystra concludes Paul's attacker must be a murderer (Acts 28:4), or when Paul resolves to return (Acts 18:21). When paired with a negative particle, it reverses into total denial: 'not at all' or 'by no means' (Rom 3:9). Spanish captures both poles well: 'ciertamente' for affirmation and 'de ninguna manera' for emphatic negation. The word's flexibility makes it a rhetorical intensifier whose force depends entirely on its syntactic context.

Senses
1. certainly, surely, by all means Emphatic affirmation: 'certainly,' 'surely,' 'by all means.' Strengthens assertions, confident expectations, or resolute intentions. In Luke 4:23 Jesus anticipates the crowd will 'surely' quote the proverb; in Acts 28:4 the islanders conclude the snakebite victim is 'certainly' a murderer. French 'certainement' and Spanish 'seguramente' convey the same assured tone. The usage in 1 Cor 9:10 ('he certainly says it for our sake') shows Paul wielding it for theological argument.

2. at all, entirely (often with negation) Used with negation to express total denial or emphatic refusal: 'not at all,' 'by no means.' In Rom 3:9 Paul asks whether Jews have any advantage and answers 'not at all' (ou pantōs). Similarly in 1 Cor 16:12, Apollos was 'not at all' willing to come at present. Spanish 'de ninguna manera' and German 'auf keinen Fall' highlight the absolute quality of the denial. The same word that affirms everything can, with a simple negative particle, negate everything.
