An adverb of time indicating lateness—either late in the day (evening) or after a considerable interval. Its most theologically significant use is Matt 28:1, where 'late on the Sabbath' marks the transition toward resurrection morning, a passage much debated regarding whether it means 'after the Sabbath' or 'late on the Sabbath evening.' In Mark 11:11 and 11:19 it simply notes Jesus leaving the temple 'at evening,' and Mark 13:35 lists 'evening' among the watches of the night. Spanish 'tarde' and French 'le soir' both render the temporal lateness straightforwardly, though the Matt 28:1 usage remains a celebrated crux of New Testament chronology.
