ὁρμάω G3729
To rush, charge forward; to set oneself in violent motion, often as a stampede or headlong assault.
A verb meaning to rush forward impetuously, to charge or stampede. Its NT uses are strikingly dramatic: the Gadarene swine 'rushed' headlong down a steep bank into the sea (Matt 8:32; Mark 5:13; Luke 8:33), the crowd 'rushed' upon Stephen with one accord (Acts 7:57), and the Ephesian mob 'rushed' into the theater (Acts 19:29). The French 'se précipiter' (to hurl oneself) and Spanish 'se lanzaron/se precipitó' both capture the violent, uncontrolled momentum. Derived from ὁρμή (impulse, onset), the word carries an inherent sense of irresistible force.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To rush or charge forward violently — to move with sudden, impetuous force, often as a mob or stampede. The root ὁρμή (impulse, onset) gives this verb a sense of irresistible forward momentum. Three of the five NT occurrences describe the demon-possessed swine stampeding down a cliff into the sea (Matt 8:32; Mark 5:13; Luke 8:33), one of the most vivid action scenes in the Gospels. Acts 7:57 uses it of the crowd rushing at Stephen with murderous intent, and Acts 19:29 of the Ephesian riot surging into the theater. The Spanish 'se precipitó' and French 'se précipiter' both convey the headlong, uncontrolled quality of the movement. 5×
