Senses
1. sense 1 — To reach out for, desire, or aspire to—to extend oneself toward a goal, whether noble or base. 1 Timothy 3:1 commends aspiring (ὀρέγω) to church leadership. 1 Timothy 6:10 warns that reaching for wealth leads astray. Hebrews 11:16 speaks of the faithful desiring a heavenly homeland. The Greek verb literally means 'stretch out, reach toward,' and metaphorically covers longing and ambition. Spanish 'desear/anhelan' (desire/long for) and German 'trachten' (strive for) capture the active reaching-toward quality, whether the goal is worthy or destructive. 3×
