ὁδηγ-έω G3594
To guide, lead along the way; to direct someone physically or spiritually toward a destination or truth.
A verb meaning to lead or guide someone along a path, derived from ὁδός (road) + ἡγέομαι (to lead). It carries both literal and metaphorical senses in the NT. In Matt 15:14 and Luke 6:39, blind guides lead others into a pit. In John 16:13, the Spirit of truth 'will guide you into all the truth.' In Acts 8:31, the Ethiopian eunuch asks Philip to guide him in understanding Scripture. The Spanish 'guiar' and French 'guider' preserve the same root sense of directional leading.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To guide or lead someone along a way, whether physically or metaphorically. The root ὁδός (road) embedded in the verb gives it a strongly directional sense — not merely influencing but actively conducting someone toward a goal. Jesus warns that blind guides (ὁδηγεῖν) lead followers into a ditch (Matt 15:14; Luke 6:39), while in John 16:13 the Holy Spirit will 'guide into all truth.' Acts 8:31 captures the intellectual sense: the eunuch cannot understand without someone to 'guide' him. Revelation 7:17 beautifully extends the image: the Lamb will guide redeemed ones to springs of living water. 5×
