ὄγκος G3591
Bulk, mass, or weight that encumbers; something heavy that hinders movement or progress
Though the Greek word can denote physical bulk or mass (heaps of wood, swelling, bodily size), its New Testament use in Hebrews 12:1 is metaphorical: 'let us lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely.' Here 'weight' refers to encumbrances that slow the Christian race—not necessarily sin itself, but legitimate burdens that nevertheless hinder spiritual progress. The athletic imagery is vivid: runners stripped off excess clothing and weight to run unencumbered. Translators consistently use 'weight' or 'burden,' recognizing the metaphor's power.
Senses
1. sense 1 — An encumbrance or burden that impedes progress, particularly in the metaphor of athletic competition. Hebrews 12:1 urges believers to discard 'every weight'—things that, while perhaps not sinful in themselves, hinder the race toward Christ. The image draws on Greek athletic culture where runners removed all unnecessary bulk before competing. 1×
