Bridegroom; the male partner in a wedding, used of Christ as the messianic bridegroom of his people.
Nymphios designates the man being married, the central male figure in the wedding celebration. Jesus draws on this image when he explains why his disciples do not fast: the wedding guests cannot mourn while the bridegroom is with them (Matt 9:15; Mark 2:19-20). The Parable of the Ten Virgins turns on the bridegroom’s delayed midnight arrival (Matt 25:1-10), and John the Baptist joyfully identifies himself as merely the bridegroom’s friend (John 3:29). Spanish novio, French fiancé, and German Bräutigam each capture the culturally specific role of the groom.
