νομοθετ-έω G3549
to enact law, receive legislation or be established by law
The process by which laws are instituted or a people receives a legal code. In Hebrews, the author uses this verb to discuss the Levitical priesthood: 'on the basis of which the people received the law' (7:11) and the new covenant which 'has been enacted on better promises' (8:6). The term links priesthood and covenant—each priestly system carries its own legislative framework. The transition from Levitical to Melchizedekian priesthood necessitates a change in the law itself.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To be given laws, enacted by legislation, or established on legal basis. Hebrews uses the perfect tense to emphasize completed legislative acts—the Mosaic law was enacted under the Levitical priesthood, the new covenant under Christ's priesthood. The passive voice suggests divine agency—God is the legislator who establishes each covenant's terms. Cross-linguistic glosses vary between 'receive law' and 'be enacted/established,' capturing both the people's reception and the law's promulgation. 2×
