To make foolish, render insipid; to become tasteless or lose one's purpose
Carries a double edge: it can mean to make something foolish (active) or to become tasteless and useless (passive). Jesus uses the salt metaphor in Matthew 5:13 and Luke 14:34 — if salt loses its savor (moranthe), it is good for nothing, a vivid image of discipleship that has lost its distinctive quality. Paul then deploys the active-causal sense in Romans 1:22 and 1 Corinthians 1:20, declaring that God has 'made foolish' the wisdom of the world.
