Molis conveys the sense that something happens only barely or with great difficulty. Luke favors this adverb, using it four times in Acts to describe situations where outcomes hung in the balance: the apostles barely restrained the crowd from sacrificing to them (Acts 14:18), the ship moved with difficulty along the coast of Crete (Acts 27:7-8), and the sailors could scarcely secure the ship's boat in the storm (Acts 27:16). Paul uses it theologically in Romans 5:7, noting that scarcely will someone die even for a righteous person, heightening by contrast the wonder of Christ's death for sinners.
