Adj-GMP  |  3× in 1 sense
hired worker, a laborer working for wages
These are wage laborers, employees rather than slaves or family members. In Jesus' parable, the prodigal son realizes even his father's 'hired workers' have food to spare (Luke 15:17), and he resolves to ask to become one (Luke 15:19, 21). The term marks a social status: not a son, not a slave, but a paid worker. This middle status becomes the prodigal's hoped-for re-entry point. Spanish 'jornaleros' (day laborers) and French 'mercenaire' (mercenary) capture the wage-for-work relationship.

Senses
1. sense 1 A hired laborer or day worker who receives wages, occupying a social position between slave and family member. In Luke 15:17, 19, 21 (the prodigal son parable), μίσθιος represents the status the son hopes to attain—better than destitution, lower than sonship. The term emphasizes wage-based employment rather than familial or ownership relations. Spanish 'jornaleros' highlights the daily-wage aspect common in agrarian economies.
