μᾰλᾰκ-ία G3119
sickness, disease; illness or bodily ailment, weakness of the body
This word denotes bodily sickness, disease, or weakness—physical ailments that afflict human beings. Matthew's Gospel uses it three times in summary statements about Jesus' healing ministry. Matthew 4:23 describes Jesus 'healing every disease and every affliction among the people.' Matthew 9:35 repeats nearly identical language, and 10:1 grants the twelve disciples 'authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.' The repetition emphasizes the comprehensive scope of Jesus' healing power—no illness was beyond his authority to cure. His healings demonstrated the inbreaking of God's kingdom, reversing the effects of the fall.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Sickness, disease, or bodily illness. All three occurrences in Matthew describe Jesus' healing ministry: he went throughout Galilee 'healing every disease and every affliction among the people' (4:23, repeated almost verbatim in 9:35), and gave the twelve disciples authority 'to heal every disease and every affliction' (10:1). The repetition underscores the comprehensive nature of Jesus' healing power—no sickness was beyond his ability to cure, demonstrating the kingdom's power over physical ailment and suffering. 3×
