μακρο-θῡμέω G3114
To be patient, exercise long-suffering — to endure delay, provocation, or hardship without retaliation
The verb μακροθυμέω (makrothymeo), literally 'long-tempered' (μακρός + θυμός), means to exercise patience or long-suffering — to bear with delay, provocation, or adversity without yielding to anger or despair. In the parable of the unforgiving servant, both debtors plead 'be patient with me' (Matt 18:26, 29). Paul declares that love 'is patient' (1 Cor 13:4), and James exhorts believers to 'be patient until the coming of the Lord' like a farmer awaiting rain (Jas 5:7-8). God himself is patient, not wishing any to perish (2 Pet 3:9), and Abraham's patience secured the promise (Heb 6:15). Arabic صَبَرَ, Hebrew הֶאֱרִיךְ אַפַּיִם, Korean 오래 참다, and Spanish 'tener paciencia' all express the same sustained forbearance.
