ληνός G3025
A winepress or wine vat; the trough in which grapes are trodden, used literally and as a symbol of divine judgment.
A lenos is a trough or vat for pressing grapes — a fixture of Mediterranean agriculture that became one of Scripture's most vivid images of divine wrath. Jesus mentions it in the parable of the vineyard tenants (Matt 21:33), where the landowner installs a winepress as part of a working vineyard. Revelation transforms it into apocalyptic imagery: the 'great winepress of God's wrath' is trodden until blood flows as high as a horse's bridle (Rev 14:19-20; 19:15). The multilingual glosses — Spanish lagar, French pressoir, German Kelter — all denote the physical wine-pressing apparatus.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A winepress or wine vat — the stone or wooden trough in which grapes are crushed to extract juice. In Matt 21:33, it appears in its literal agricultural sense as part of a vineyard's equipment. Revelation deploys it as a devastating symbol of God's final judgment: the angel thrusts the harvest into 'the great winepress of God's fury' (Rev 14:19), and blood flows from it for 1,600 stadia (Rev 14:20). Christ himself treads this winepress (Rev 19:15), echoing Isaiah 63:3. The consistent multilingual rendering (spa: lagar, fra: pressoir, deu: Kelter) confirms a unified semantic core: a vessel for crushing grapes, literal or eschatological. 5×
