A Latin loanword that entered Greek through Rome's military presence, legion denotes both a formal Roman army division (roughly 5,000 infantry plus cavalry) and, by extension, an overwhelming multitude. In the Gospels it appears most memorably as the self-identification of a demoniac's possessing spirits: 'My name is Legion, for we are many' (Mark 5:9; Luke 8:30). Jesus also invokes it in Gethsemane, declaring he could summon more than twelve legions of angels (Matt 26:53). The word conveys both organized power and terrifying numerousness.
