V-PPM/P-AFS  |  5× in 1 sense
To encircle, surround, or form a ring around; used of military siege, crowd enclosure, and cosmic gathering.
Describes the action of forming a circle around something or someone—encircling, surrounding, or besieging. Jesus prophesies that Jerusalem will be surrounded by armies (Luke 21:20), and the Jewish leaders encircle him in the temple demanding a clear answer (John 10:24). In Acts 14:20, disciples stand in a circle around the stoned Paul. Hebrews 11:30 recalls how the Israelites encircled Jericho for seven days until its walls fell. Revelation 20:9 depicts the final siege where hostile forces surround the camp of the saints. The Spanish 'rodearon' (they surrounded) and German 'umringen' (to encircle) both center on the ring-formation imagery.

Senses
1. sense 1 To encircle, surround, or besiege by forming a ring around a person, place, or group. The root κύκλος (circle) is visible in every usage. Luke 21:20 uses it prophetically of armies surrounding Jerusalem—a military siege. John 10:24 applies it to the Jews closing in around Jesus in Solomon's Colonnade, pressing for a definitive messianic claim. Acts 14:20 describes disciples gathering in a protective circle around the stoned Paul at Lystra. Heb 11:30 recalls the seven-day encirclement of Jericho. Rev 20:9 envisions the eschatological siege of the beloved city. Spanish 'rodearon' (surrounded), French 'entourer' (encircle), and German 'umringen' (ring around) all preserve the circular spatial imagery central to this verb.
