hidden place, secret location
Jesus teaches that 'no one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket' (Luke 11:33). The 'cellar' or 'hidden place' represents anywhere concealed from view. The point is that light exists to be seen—hiding it defeats its purpose. Classical usage includes crypts and vaults, underground storage spaces. Jesus' metaphor critiques those who hide the truth rather than displaying it openly. Light belongs on a lampstand, visible to all who enter.
Senses
1. sense 1 — In Jesus' teaching about light and revelation, the 'hidden place' represents the wrong location for a lamp—anywhere concealed from view defeats the lamp's purpose. The word can mean a crypt, vault, or hidden room. Spanish 'escondite' and French 'cachette' both emphasize concealment. Jesus' logic is straightforward: lamps exist to illuminate, so hiding them is absurd. Applied spiritually, this warns against concealing the truth that should be publicly proclaimed and visible. 1×
