Adj-NMS  |  1× in 1 sense
discerning, able to judge and divide (of God's word)
Hebrews declares that God's word is 'living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword... able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart' (Hebrews 4:12). The adjective means 'able to discern' or 'critical'—having the power to judge and discriminate. In classical usage it described literary critics and scholars who could discern quality and meaning. Applied to God's word, it emphasizes the capacity to penetrate human self-deception and expose true motives. Scripture itself exercises judgment.

Senses
1. sense 1 The author of Hebrews personifies Scripture as an active agent that judges human thoughts—the word itself is 'kritikos,' able to critique and discern. The classical background includes grammarians and scholars who exercised critical judgment on texts; here the roles reverse, and the text judges the reader. German 'scharf' (sharp) and French 'scharf' both capture the penetrating, discriminating quality. God's word doesn't just inform; it exposes and judges the hidden recesses of the heart.
