Krisis denotes the entire arc of judicial process — the act of judging, the verdict rendered, and the sentence executed. Across 48 New Testament occurrences, it ranges from Jesus' warnings about the 'day of judgment' awaiting Sodom and Gomorrah (Matt 10:15; 11:22, 24) to the Johannine declaration that 'the Father has given all judgment to the Son' (John 5:22, 27). It carries both forensic and eschatological weight: the scribes 'devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers — they will receive greater krisis' (Mark 12:40). Yet the word also retains its classical Greek sense of 'discernment' in Jesus' rebuke that the Pharisees neglect 'justice, mercy, and faithfulness' (Matt 23:23), where krisis means justice in the ethical rather than eschatological sense. Spanish 'juicio,' French 'jugement,' and German 'Gericht' each preserve this double valence of judicial process and divine reckoning.
