raven, black carrion bird
Jesus points to the ravens as exemplars of divine provision: 'Consider the ravens—they neither sow nor reap, yet God feeds them' (Luke 12:24). These birds, ceremonially unclean in Levitical law, become object lessons in trust. Classical Greek includes ravens in proverbial expressions and weather omens. The choice of ravens (rather than sparrows, as in Matthew's parallel) may reflect their reputation as scavengers dependent on providence rather than human agriculture. God's care extends even to unclean birds.

Senses
1. sense 1 Luke's version of Jesus' teaching on anxiety features ravens as examples of creatures that receive divine provision without agricultural labor. The selection is striking: ravens appear in the Old Testament as both Elijah's miraculous providers and symbols of desolation. All language witnesses identify the specific bird—large, black, carrion-eating corvids. Jesus' logic moves from lesser to greater: if God feeds despised scavengers, how much more will he care for his children?
