V-IIA-3P  |  4× in 1 sense
To be in danger, face peril; to risk one's safety or standing.
Describes being exposed to serious risk or peril. The word spans physical danger—as when the disciples' boat was swamped (Luke 8:23)—and institutional or social jeopardy, as when Paul warns that the silversmiths' trade and even the temple of Artemis 'is in danger' of being discredited (Acts 19:27). Paul also uses it of his own daily mortal peril for the gospel (1 Cor 15:30). The German in-Gefahr-sein and Spanish correr-peligro both capture the sense of ongoing, present exposure to threat.

Senses
1. sense 1 To be in danger or at risk, whether physically, socially, or legally. In Luke 8:23 the peril is a life-threatening storm; in Acts 19:27 the danger is economic and religious (the Artemis cult losing credibility); in Acts 19:40 it is legal jeopardy (being charged with rioting); and in 1 Cor 15:30 Paul speaks of constant mortal risk for the faith. French être-en-danger and Spanish correr-peligro both emphasize the active, ongoing nature of the exposure to harm.
