κατέρχομαι G2718
To come down, go down, descend; to move from a higher place to a lower one.
Katerchomai is a compound verb (kata + erchomai) meaning to come or go down from a higher elevation to a lower one. In the Gospels, Jesus 'comes down' from the mountain after the Transfiguration (Luke 9:37) and descends to Capernaum (Luke 4:31). In Acts it becomes a standard term for traveling from Jerusalem — which sits on high ground — down to coastal cities or other regions (Acts 8:5, to Samaria; Acts 11:27, to Antioch; Acts 18:22, to Caesarea). Paul and others 'come down' from Jerusalem repeatedly in the missionary narratives. The Spanish 'bajar,' French 'descendre,' and German 'herabkommen' all preserve the directional downward movement inherent in the prefix kata.
Senses
1. come down, go down, descend — To move downward from a higher location to a lower one, whether literal geographic descent or travel from an elevated city to lower-lying regions. In Luke's Gospel, Jesus comes down from mountain settings (Luke 4:31; 9:37). In Acts, the verb becomes nearly formulaic for departing Jerusalem — the city's elevated position makes all travel from it a 'going down' (Acts 8:5; 9:32; 11:27; 18:22). Spanish 'bajar,' French 'descendre,' and German 'herabkommen' consistently reflect the directional kata- prefix. 15×
