N-AFS  |  2× in 1 sense
possession, holding, the act of taking or state of possessing land or property
This noun describes possession or ownership, particularly of land. Stephen recounts God's promise to Abraham: 'He gave him no inheritance in [the land], not even a foot's length, but promised to give it to him as a possession (κατάσχεσιν), and to his offspring after him' (Acts 7:5). Later, Stephen says God 'drove out the nations before our fathers' so that they could bring the tabernacle 'into the land which they took possession (κατασχέσει) of under Joshua' (Acts 7:45). The term connects God's promises to Israel's eventual settlement in Canaan, emphasizing both the gift and the fulfillment of possession.

Senses
1. sense 1 Both uses in Acts 7 relate to Israel's possession of the promised land. Classical usage (LSJ) includes holding back, retention, possession, or relation/attitude. Spanish 'posesión' and French 'posséder' (to possess) capture the ownership sense. Stephen's speech traces salvation history from Abraham's landless sojourning to Joshua's conquest, with possession of the land as a key stage in God's covenant faithfulness. Yet Stephen's larger point is that Israel's privilege—possession of the land, the tabernacle, the law—did not guarantee faithfulness; they still resisted the Spirit and rejected the Righteous One.
