θαρσ-έω G2293
To take courage, be of good cheer; an imperative exhortation dispelling fear with confident hope.
Tharseō is the verb behind Jesus's characteristic command 'Take courage!' spoken to the paralytic (Matt 9:2), the hemorrhaging woman (Matt 9:22), and the terrified disciples on the sea (Matt 14:27; Mark 6:50). Its Attic relative tharreō appears elsewhere in Paul, but in the Gospels tharseō is almost a signature word of Jesus's compassion meeting human dread. Spanish Anímate and Ten ánimo capture the warmth; French Courage and German getrost sein convey the assured confidence the word imparts.

1. Take courage — Take courage, be of good cheer—an imperative urging boldness or calm confidence in the face of fear or distress. Classical Greek used it both positively (brave confidence) and negatively (rash over-boldness), but every NT instance is a reassuring exhortation. Jesus speaks it to the paralytic before healing (Matt 9:2), to the woman healed of bleeding (Matt 9:22), to disciples terrified on the water (Matt 14:27; Mark 6:50), and through the crowd to blind Bartimaeus (Mark 10:49). Spanish Tened ánimo and German getrost sein emphasize the settled, assured quality of the courage offered. 7×
