Death — the cessation of life, whether physical, judicial, or spiritual; the ultimate enemy overcome in Christ's resurrection
Thanatos is the standard Greek noun for death, derived from the verb thnesko ('to die'). Its 120 New Testament occurrences span the full range of mortality: natural death (Phil 1:20), violent execution (Matt 20:18), judicial death penalty (Matt 26:66), and the theological concept of spiritual death as separation from God (Rom 6:23, 'the wages of sin is death').
