The adverb ede ('already') signals that an event or state has reached a point earlier than expected or by the time of speaking. It appears at critical narrative junctures: the crowds have 'already' been with Jesus three days and have nothing to eat (Matt 15:32), the hour is 'already' late (Matt 14:15), and whoever looks lustfully has 'already' committed adultery in his heart (Matt 5:28). This last usage is theologically striking -- ede collapses the gap between intention and deed. With 61 New Testament occurrences, the word maps cleanly across languages: Spanish ya, French deja, German schon -- each capturing the sense of temporal completion or arrival.
