Life — biological existence and, distinctively in the NT, the eternal quality of life that comes from God through Christ
Zōē in classical Greek could mean livelihood, substance, or simply the state of being alive. The New Testament dramatically reweights the term: of its 135 occurrences, the vast majority denote not mere biological existence but the divine, imperishable quality of life that belongs to God and is given through faith in Christ. John's Gospel is especially saturated with this usage — 'I am the way, the truth, and the life' (John 14:6); 'I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly' (John 10:10). Paul contrasts this life with death as the wages of sin (Rom 6:23). The adjective aiōnios ('eternal') frequently modifies zōē, but even without it the word often implies the fullness of God's own vitality.

Senses
1. [split] of life Life in its fullest sense: biological existence, vitality, and — especially in New Testament theological usage — the quality of divine, eternal life given through relationship with God in Christ. John's writings concentrate this meaning most intensely: 'in him was life, and the life was the light of men' (John 1:4); 'this is eternal life, that they know you' (John 17:3). Paul sets zōē opposite death and condemnation (Rom 5:17-18; 6:23). Spanish 'vida,' French 'vie,' and German 'Leben' all preserve the single-word breadth, though none fully captures the eschatological weight the New Testament pours into this term.
