εὐχᾰριστ-ία G2169
Thanksgiving, gratitude; the act of giving thanks to God, central to Christian worship and prayer.
Eucharistia — the word from which 'Eucharist' derives — denotes the act of expressing gratitude to God. Paul treats thanksgiving as fundamental to the Christian life: it should accompany every prayer (Phil 4:6; Col 4:2), overflow from the community's experience of grace (2 Cor 4:15; 9:11–12), and characterize all speech in place of coarseness (Eph 5:4). In 1 Corinthians 14:16 Paul insists that corporate thanksgiving must be intelligible so others can say 'Amen.' The Pastoral letters frame it as the proper response to God's good creation (1 Tim 4:3–4). Across languages — Spanish 'acción de gracias,' French 'action de grâces,' German 'Danksagung' — the term consistently points to active, expressed gratitude rather than mere feeling.
Senses
1. thanksgiving, gratitude — The act or expression of giving thanks to God, whether in personal prayer, corporate worship, or as a general posture of the Christian life. Paul makes it a companion to petition (Phil 4:6; Col 4:2) and the proper overflow of experiencing God's grace (2 Cor 4:15; 9:11–12). In 1 Corinthians 14:16 it denotes a liturgical thanksgiving that must be intelligible. The multilingual evidence — Spanish 'acción de gracias,' French 'action de grâces,' German 'Danksagung' — uniformly reflects active vocal gratitude, not passive sentiment. 15×
