εὐλογ-ητός G2128
Adj-GMS  |  8× in 1 sense
Blessed, worthy of praise; a verbal adjective reserved almost exclusively for God as the object of blessing.
This verbal adjective from εὐλογέω ('to bless') is a term of high liturgical register, used in the New Testament almost exclusively of God or Christ. It appears in doxological formulae — 'Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ' (2 Cor 1:3; Eph 1:3; 1 Pet 1:3) — and in the high priest's question about whether Jesus is 'the Christ, the Son of the Blessed' (Mark 14:61). Paul's declaration that Christ is 'God over all, blessed forever' (Rom 9:5) presses the term into a Christological claim. Spanish bendito and French béni reflect the same devotional weight, marking the word as belonging to worship rather than casual speech.

Senses
1. blessed Worthy of blessing and praise, applied as a divine epithet. Unlike the more common μακάριος (blessed in the sense of fortunate), εὐλογητός is reserved for God as the recipient of human praise and adoration. It anchors the great doxologies: 'Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ' (2 Cor 1:3; Eph 1:3; 1 Pet 1:3), and Paul's theologically charged 'who is over all, God blessed forever' (Rom 9:5). The high priest's phrase 'the Son of the Blessed' (Mark 14:61) uses it as a reverential circumlocution for God himself. Luke 1:68 places it in Zechariah's hymn, linking it to Israel's covenant praise tradition.
