εὐᾰρεστ-ος G2101
Well-pleasing, acceptable; describing conduct or persons that are gratifying and approved, especially by God.
An adjective meaning 'well-pleasing' or 'acceptable,' used almost exclusively of what is pleasing to God. Paul urges believers to present their bodies as living sacrifices, holy and well-pleasing to God (Rom 12:1), to discern what is well-pleasing to the Lord (Rom 12:2; Eph 5:10), and to make it their ambition to be pleasing to him (2 Cor 5:9). In Hebrews 13:21, God equips believers for every good work that is well-pleasing in his sight. Spanish 'agradable' and French 'agréable' both carry the warmth of genuine approval, not mere tolerance.
Senses
1. well-pleasing / acceptable — Well-pleasing or acceptable, describing conduct, offerings, or persons that genuinely gratify and win approval — almost always with God as the one pleased. Paul builds a theology of pleasing God around this word: presenting one's body as a living sacrifice 'well-pleasing to God' (Rom 12:1), testing and discerning 'the good and well-pleasing and perfect will of God' (Rom 12:2), making it one's ambition to be 'well-pleasing to him' (2 Cor 5:9), and serving Christ in righteousness as 'well-pleasing to God' (Rom 14:18). French 'agréable' and German 'wohlgefaellig' both capture the sense of warm divine approval, not grudging acceptance. 9×
