Still, yet; marking temporal continuity or, with negation, cessation ('no longer, not anymore')
A common Greek adverb of time that signals something is ongoing or persists up to a given moment. In its positive use it means 'still' or 'yet,' as when the disciples are told the Father still speaks (Matt 17:5). When paired with negation particles like οὐκέτι or μηκέτι, the sense flips to 'no longer' or 'not anymore,' as in Hebrews 10:2 where conscience no longer accuses. German 'noch,' French 'encore,' and Hebrew עוֹד all mirror this dual capacity of a single temporal marker.

Senses
1. still, yet (temporal continuity) Temporal continuity: 'still, yet' — signals that a state or action persists into the present or expected future. German 'noch,' French 'encore,' Korean '아직,' and Hindi 'अभी' all converge on unbroken duration. Prominent in narrative transitions like Matt 26:47 ('while he was still speaking') and Matt 17:5 ('he was still speaking when a bright cloud overshadowed them'). 65×

2. no longer, not anymore (negated continuity) Negated continuity: 'no longer, not anymore' — when governed by negation (οὐκέτι, μηκέτι), the adverb marks the cessation of a previously ongoing state. Cross-lingual glosses still render the bare adverb the same way (Spa. 'aún,' Fr. 'encore'), relying on context for the reversal. Key passages include Luke 16:2 ('you can no longer be steward') and Heb 10:2 ('no longer any consciousness of sins'), where the end of a condition carries theological weight. 28×
