V-ANA  |  5× in 1 sense
To obtain, attain, reach; to succeed in gaining what one seeks or has been promised.
Carries the basic sense of hitting a mark or successfully reaching a goal, extended to mean obtaining or attaining something desired. Paul uses it pointedly in Romans 11:7 to describe Israel's paradox: the nation did not obtain what it sought, but the elect obtained it. The author of Hebrews celebrates Abraham, who by patience 'obtained the promise' (Heb 6:15), and the heroes of faith who 'obtained promises' (Heb 11:33). James warns that coveting without asking God leads to not obtaining (Jas 4:2). Spanish 'alcanzar/obtener' nicely captures both the striving and the successful attainment.

Senses
1. sense 1 To obtain, attain, succeed in gaining — to reach or acquire what was sought or promised. The classical sense of 'hitting the mark' underlies the metaphorical usage of successfully reaching a goal. Spanish 'alcanzar' (to reach/attain) and 'obtener' (to obtain), along with German 'erlangen,' all converge on the sense of successful acquisition. In Rom 11:7 it appears twice in contrast — Israel failed to obtain, but the elect did. Heb 6:15 celebrates Abraham's patient attainment of the promise; Heb 11:33 lists obtaining promises among the achievements of faith. Jas 4:2 uses the negative to expose the futility of selfish desire.
