To gather together, assemble; to collect people from scattered places into one body (active and passive)
A compound verb (epi + syn + ago) conveying the purposeful bringing together of scattered individuals into a unified group. Jesus himself uses it in the poignant image of a mother hen gathering her brood under her wings (Matt 23:37; Luke 13:34), and it describes the eschatological ingathering when the Son of Man sends angels to gather the elect from the four winds (Matt 24:31; Mark 13:27). In the passive, it portrays crowds pressing together around Jesus (Mark 1:33) and nations assembled before the throne of judgment (Matt 25:32). Spanish 'reunir/reunirá' and French 'rassembler' both capture the reuniting impulse at the heart of this word.
Senses
1. gather together (active) — Active forms meaning 'to gather together, collect, assemble' people or creatures from scattered locations into one place. The defining image is Jesus' lament over Jerusalem: 'how often I wanted to gather (episynagagein) your children, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings' (Matt 23:37; Luke 13:34). The eschatological use in Matt 24:31 and Mark 13:27 extends the image to cosmic scale -- angels will 'gather together the elect from the four winds.' Spanish 'reunirá/reunirán' and English 'he will gather together' reflect the purposeful, sovereign quality of the action. 5×

2. be gathered together (passive) — Passive forms meaning 'to be gathered, be assembled,' describing the resulting state when people converge into a crowd or assembly. Mark 1:33 pictures the whole city 'gathered together' (episynegmene) at Peter's door; Luke 12:1 narrates myriads 'having been gathered together' so densely they trampled one another; and Luke 17:37 uses an enigmatic proverb about vultures gathering where the body lies. Spanish 'habiéndose reunido' and 'reunida' preserve the reflexive-passive quality -- the gathering happens to the crowd rather than being directed by a single agent. 3×
