ἐπέχω G1907
To hold forth, give attention to, notice; to hold out something or to fix one's mind on something carefully.
A versatile compound verb (epi + echō, 'hold upon') with two distinguishable NT senses. It can mean to hold forth or offer something outward, as in holding forth the word of life (Phil 2:16). It also means to give careful attention, to fix one's notice on someone or something -- the guests watching where they sat (Luke 14:7), the lame man giving attention to Peter and John (Acts 3:5), and Paul urging Timothy to give heed to himself and his teaching (1 Tim 4:16). The Spanish and French translations -- presta-atención, faire-attention -- highlight the attentive sense, while 'holding-forth' captures the outward-directed meaning.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To give careful attention to, notice, fix one's mind upon. Jesus noticed how the guests were choosing places of honor (Luke 14:7), the lame man gave attention to Peter and John expecting something (Acts 3:5), and Paul exhorts Timothy to pay close attention to himself and his teaching (1 Tim 4:16). Spanish presta-atención, notando and French faire-attention, prendre-garde confirm the cognitive focus. In Acts 19:22, Paul 'stayed on' (gave his attention to) Asia for a time, blending attentiveness with lingering presence. At Phil 2:16, the verb shifts to 'holding forth' the word of life, where the directional prefix epi- carries an outward, offering sense rather than an inward, attentive one. 5×
