Praise, commendation — approval from God or people; that which is praiseworthy or calls forth admiration
The noun ἔπαινος (epainos) denotes praise, commendation, or approval — whether from God, from authorities, or from fellow believers. True circumcision of the heart receives its 'praise' from God, not from people (Rom 2:29), and civil rulers give 'praise' to those who do good (Rom 13:3). At Christ's return, each person will receive 'commendation' from God (1 Cor 4:5). Ephesians uses the word doxologically — election and inheritance are 'to the praise of his glory' (Eph 1:6, 12, 14). Phil 4:8 urges dwelling on whatever is worthy of 'praise.' Spanish 'alabanza/elogio' and German 'Lob' reflect both divine and human commendation.
