V-FIP-3P  |  5× in 1 sense
To become weary, faint, or lose heart; to grow exhausted in body or spirit.
Describes a state of physical exhaustion or spiritual discouragement in which a person's strength gives out. Jesus uses it concretely when he warns that dismissing the hungry crowd would cause them to faint on the road (Matt 15:32; Mark 8:3). Paul and the author of Hebrews apply it to moral and spiritual endurance: believers must not grow weary in doing good (Gal 6:9) nor lose heart under divine discipline (Heb 12:3, 5). Spanish 'desfallecer' and French 'défaillir' both convey the draining away of vitality.

Senses
1. sense 1 To become faint, exhausted, or disheartened—whether physically or spiritually. In the Gospels the word is literal: crowds might collapse from hunger if sent away without food (Matt 15:32; Mark 8:3). In the epistles it shifts to the moral-spiritual register: Galatians 6:9 urges perseverance in well-doing lest one 'lose heart,' and Hebrews 12:3, 5 warns against fainting under persecution or correction. The Spanish 'desfallecer' and French 'défaillir' mirror this dual physical-spiritual exhaustion.
