Chosen, elect -- selected by God for a special purpose, relationship, or eschatological destiny
An adjective meaning chosen or picked out, used in the New Testament almost exclusively of divine election. Jesus warns that 'many are called but few are chosen' (Matt 22:14), and the Olivet Discourse speaks of the elect for whose sake tribulation will be shortened (Matt 24:22, 31). Paul calls believers God's chosen ones (Col 3:12; Rom 8:33), and Peter addresses 'elect exiles' (1 Pet 1:1). Christ himself is 'the Chosen One' (Luke 23:35). The term carries both honor and responsibility. French 'elu' and German 'Auserwahlter' emphasize the gravity of divine selection.
